First settling on Denver’s westside, the Guzman Family was one of a multitude of Latino families who moved to the United States from south of the border, bringing with them an entrepreneurial spirit that still resonates strongly today.
Essentially starting with nothing, Lalo Guzman worked long hours and saved whatever money he could by working at what was once Silver Tire and Wheel on 17th and Federal Boulevard. Learning about and mastering this trade, Lalo used the proceeds from his labor to open his own shop with his wife Maria in Globeville on the SW corner of 51st and Washington Street. “He was getting sick of working for somebody else and wanted to start his own thing,” explained their son Luis, who assists with the operations of the shop. Seizing the opportunity, the Guzmans worked relentlessly at servicing their customer base and making a name for themselves, with Lalo working in the shop 12 hours a day and Maria working two jobs until they got themselves established and on their feet. “It’s not easy owning and running a business…it’s hard work,” Luis stated.
After 32 years, the shop at 5095 Washington Street has seen its fair share of ups and downs, but for the past few years, their business has been thriving. Perhaps this is a testament to their dedication to their clientele. “No matter what, we are here for all of our customers, and do whatever we can to make them happy.”
Specializing in new and used tires, mounting and balancing, Guzman Tires continues to provide G.E.S. and Denver with excellent service via the hard work and perseverance that all started in Aguascalientes, Mexico, with an American dream. “We thank God everyday, and when it’s time to go, it’s time to go.” Until that day comes, grab a delicious taco or two from the on-site food truck while you’re getting great tire service from a very local company.
