The East Denver Food Sovereignty Initiative and Noir Market hosted a chili cook-off in November at the Viña Apartments in Elyria-Swansea, where the best dishes in the G.E.S. area were pitted against one another. Attendees voted for what they thought was the best recipe and received a $25 gift card for their participation.
The winner was given $250. In first place was Maria Mota, second place went to Mercedes Gonzales, and Alexis Mendez took third. Additionally, representatives of Noir Market said the grocery store they have planned for the Viña Apartments is slated to open sometime in the fall. The G.E.S. community members will eventually be able to choose the name of the store.
