Check it Out: ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ by Shelby Van Pelt

By Sara Galenbeck

My name is Sara Galenbeck, and I am the librarian at the Valdez-Perry Library in the Elyria neighborhood. We are located off the corner of 47th Street and Vine at 4690 Vine St. We offer many services at the library, but one that I would like to highlight is our Kids Club. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m., we have Kids Club in our community room for our school-age kids.

More often than not, we do a craft during this time, but occasionally we have speakers from other organizations come do a presentation. We partner with CSU Spur each month, and have previously had a tarantula come visit and learned about different types of insects. Come join us for some fun!

Additionally, I would love to share with you a book I read recently and enjoyed. “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt follows the life of a widow and her relationship with a giant Pacific octopus who resides at the aquarium where she cleans. Tova is a widow who lost her son 30 years ago in a drowning accident. She works at the aquarium at night as a cleaner and is trying to decide what the next step in her life is. She forms a bond with the octopus, Marcellus, who has his opinions on the matter.

Cameron comes to briefly take over Tova’s cleaning job and becomes friends with both Tova and Marcellus. Marcellus discovers there might be a link between the two and helps them discover what that is. While the book is told from the perspective of each of the characters, the bond between Tova and Marcellus is the true focus. While a book where an octopus has a perspective might sound like a bit much to you, this reads like a work of fiction and is truly heartwarming!

If you are interested in reading this book or getting other book suggestions, stop by the library and we can help you out!
